in corporation with El Hijra institution in Amsterdam, MEET THE SYRIANS will soon invite you to the event ‘’the 24th edition of El Hijra literature awards’’ we’ve opened an international call for Syrian writers on the 26th of August 2016, and we’ve received 25 participations, 10 poets and 15 prose writers stay tuned for more details about this event event program: What do you know about art and literature from the Arab world? During El Hizjra’s ‘Night of Arabic Literature’ on Saturday 26 November 2016 from 6 pm – 1 am at De Nieuwe Liefde in Amsterdam you can experience a festival setting with great food, music, literature, debate and a real souk. El Hizjra, an Amsterdam-based foundation showcasing Arabic art and culture together with MEET THE SYRIANS, and venue De Nieuwe Liefde have teamed up to organise the first Dutch ‘Night of Arabic Literature', a young and colourful cultural festival in Amsterdam. Main themes: the power of the word, cultural connections, shared values and new, constructive perspectives on artistic, political and social subjects. The souq setting located at the entrance will remind visitors of the well-known Djemaa el Fna (the main market square in Marrakech) with stalls for henna tattoos, calligraphy, (natural) cosmetics, fashion inspired by the region, Oriental jewellery, books, Moroccan tea and delicious (finger) food, to name some. Expect poetry recitals, oral history, spoken word and story tellers accompanied by musicians. Moreover, the finalists of the annual El Hizjra writing contest will be reading from their work in Dutch and Arabic prior to the jury's official selection. Aspiring and established writers, journalists, columnists, opinion makers, publishers and art and culture lovers from the Netherlands and the Arab world will be enabled to challenge and inspire each other. A famous writer from the Arab world will open the evening with a stimulating lecture, which will be followed by a debate amongst correspondents based in the Middle East. But there’ll be more to enjoy. Come and find out for yourself! El Hizjra’s annual writing contest is a unique initiative that has successfully been exported to elsewhere in Europe. Publishers, press, policymakers and the audience alike consider it a prestigious award and a treasure chest of future writing talent with a bicultural background. Being on El Hizjra’s shortlist regularly proves the springboard to a literary career. Successful examples are the authors Abdelkader Benali, Mustafa Salazar, MohammedBenzakour, Said El Haji and Mounir (Monique) Samuel.
